Sunday 3rd June – Relax and walk **** Two Canals – sunny and warm.

Good night by the Stratford South Canal at Lapworth Junction but woke at five and had a quick walk along the canal to check the early morning mist photo opportunity but nothing caught my eye so went back to bed. Decided to bike to Warwick tomorrow so not in any hurry. Laid in reading, then Mag knitted outside. Breakfast followed by me doing my exercises as Mag tried to finish her complicated rose pattern cushion for Mary - she will be glad when it is finished! We had our tame Robin back feeding its youngster with two crazy chattering squirrels whizzing about in the trees above the van. Things stared to liven up with walkers, joggers, cyclists and narrow boats mainly heading towards Birmingham. There is a complicated old-fashioned water tap in a metal post near the van and there has been warning tape around it making us think it was out of order. This morning a canal volunteer took it off leaving it open for canal boats to top up their tanks. One had already topped up this morning and nothing seemed amiss but later another boat pulled up and the woman went to use the tap and nearly jumped out of her skin!! She had discovered that a Blue Tit was rearing four young in the cast iron post which the mother entered through a small hole in the top. The tape must have been put round by a volunteer who realised the nest was there and wanted to protect it. The woman this morning obviously hadn’t realised. We had a nice chat with the narrowboat owners, a couple from Cornwall who come up several times a year but have still got their house. I quickly got the camera to take a photo of the tiny but nearly fledged babies:) and Mag made a note to put on the tap and some tape round it to stop people using it. The note caught lots of people’s attention and they were thrilled to hear the babies chirruping away and we watched the parents flying in and out hundreds of times to keep up the supply of food. They even discovered our bird feeder :) Mag suggested we do the circular two canals walk so she packed the picnic and we headed off on the much wider Grand Union Canal but reach the turning point much quicker than expected - a nice canal pub only a mile away. We then followed the return route along Dicks Lane to reach the Stratford Canal where we stopped at a lock for our picnic, chicken rolls and salad which we had to eat with our fingers as we forgot the forks! It was then only a mile back to the van but that was enough on a warm day. We had a cuppa then I fell asleep in the van as Mag finished the cushion front:) Things went quiet in the afternoon and we didn’t see a boat! Yummy Morrison’s Shepard’s pie for tea before filling up some water bottles at the marina and a quick walk around the basin. Then back to the van to sort out the pics and blog and to look forward to the very delicious Muller Greek Yogurt with coconut!
